Andy Evansen
a master of watercolor,
author of the course
Night scenes are very difficult in watercolor because of how much paint you need to use to make things look dark without becoming too muddy.
Andy will demonstrate a night painting and show example of some of his previous paintings to highlight some important aspects of making those small spots of ‘light’, whether the moon, headlights or streetlights, appear like they are bright while keeping the mystery in shadows.

Course program
Lesson 1
About materials
We will dive into the crucial realm of materials, guiding you on how to make informed choices, what key factors to pay attention to, and the essential minimum set of art supplies needed to embark on your watercolor journey
Lesson 2
Studying brushstroke and surface
We will do a quick exercise to understand how a dry or wet surface works, using different references.
Lesson 3
Sea night scene. Part I
We will explore the theories of nocturne painting based on Andy's work. We will learn how to paint a night scene on the seashore, depicting the lights of houses in the background, reflections on the water. Andy will also show how to paint the moon.
Lesson 4
Sea night scene. Part II
We continue to paint that scene. We’ll create the texture of sand, paint the boats, use the technique of dry brush for rocks and trees, add figures.
Lesson 5
Street night scene. Part I
We will make a simplified drawing. Paint a scene in the wet on wet technique, make the first layer. We'll learn how to draw light from a streetlight, make soft edges, and add contrast.
Lesson 6
Street night scene. Part II
We will continue painting the scene, adding here a dramatic night sky and adding some shapes without too much detail.
Bonus:
Pre-recorded session with Andy Evansen. Mixing greens
— learn to convey aerial perspective, making our landscapes deep and dimensional,
— see how to mix different shades of green color for a realistic landscape,

Wow, what a great lesson. This isn't a scene I would normally paint but I really enjoyed the lesson very much and picked up several things to apply to my own water nocturnes.

I’m happy I was able to paint this nocturne. With your demo and all the previous exercises this challenging scene has turned fun to paint, even if things didn’t seem right at some point ( before the mid-value shape). I was able to trust the process, which makes me realize how much more confidence I got while doing your course The Art of Watercolors with Artefacto Thank you so much, Andy, for your excellent guidance!

I was fairly happy this... I'm glad that I was able to remove the sky mess I had at the horizon before it dried. The final result was more pleasing. I cut the size of the mountain down since I liked my sky in the upper right and I thought that was too big anyway.

I enjoyed the lesson, hips of great tips, thank you Andy! Though I painted it slightly different from Andy’s demo, but not much… :)

Sea scape night scene. Great tips on how to tackle. I lightened the dark clouds a bit and it left some funny lift marks. Maybe those are distant fireworks.

Even though this is the last lesson, it is still a long way for me to reach the point of painting a good painting: I have been saying this even after many courses I have taken. A painter is only as good as the number of practice that he or she has done. 😅
