A New Course by Jarnie Godwin
A Botanical Summer: Painting Realistic Flowers in Watercolor
One flower. White paper. Every petal, every shadow, every shift of color. Learn to paint botanicals so real they look three-dimensional.
4 paintings · 8.5 hours of HD video · Lifetime access
AT A GLANCE
Botanical painting has its own rules. This course teaches them from the ground up.
4 projects, 4 flowers. You start with a single bud and finish with 2 flowers side by side. Drawings and full reference packs are provided for every project. You focus on painting.
"I see my botanical subjects almost as a portrait painter sees a person. I look for a unique personality which excites, intrigues and informs my painting" – Jarnie Godwin
IS THIS RIGHT FOR YOU?
Flat Flowers
You paint, but your flowers look flat. Petals sit on the paper like cutouts. You want them to feel rounded, alive, coming off the page.
Stuck on Tutorials
You follow tutorials, but can't paint on your own. You copy steps, but when the video stops, you don't know what to do next.
New to Botanicals
You paint other subjects, but flowers have always attracted you. You want a structured way into botanical painting.
Water Panic
Too much water, too little, color going where it shouldn't. You want to feel comfortable with watercolor, not anxious every time paint hits the paper.
JARNIE'S APPROACH
- One subject, total focus. No scenes, no backgrounds. You spend an entire lesson with one flower. You study its structure, its light, its color.
- Every decision explained. Each step comes with a reason. Not "apply a wash here", but why this wash, why this color, why at this stage.
- "I always try to answer why we do it this way. So that when my students go to pick something of their own, they know why they do it that way" – Jarnie Godwin
- Real process, nothing hidden. Every lesson is filmed at painting speed. When something goes wrong, you see it happen and you see it get fixed.
COURSE PROGRAM
Lesson 1 · Iris Germanica Bud
A tight rounded bud with a stem. Your introduction to form and dimension: building volume through light, shadow, and layered washes.
1 lesson, 1 h 43 min
Lesson 2 · Clematis "Arabella"
A cup-shaped flower with petals coming towards the viewer. Dark shadow tones, pink-to-violet transitions, and a sharp stamen centre.

Lesson 3 · Sweet Pea
Two flowers side by side, different shapes, different mixes. The most challenging project: composition, separation, perspective, and a fine delicate stem.
1 lesson, 2 h 20 min
Lesson 4 · Summer Cosmos
Full open flower in saturated pink with cast shadows. Consistent color across every petal. Knowing when enough detail is enough.
1 lesson, 2 h 23 min

This Is What You Will Paint
MEET JARNIE GODWIN
Jarnie came to botanical painting with no art training. Her background was architecture, graphic design, and ten years of teaching in the classroom.
"I just started as a complete beginner. I wasn't even that good and just carried on. It's a journey that I know other people can take because I've done it" – Jarnie Godwin
WHAT YOU'LL ACHIEVE
Realistic form on paper
Petals, buds, and stems that look rounded and alive.
Clean color transitions
Smooth shifts between colors. No muddy edges.
Independence from tutorials
Pick your own flower and know where to start, what to do, and why.
A trained eye
You'll start seeing structure, light, and color shifts in every flower you look at.
Confidence with watercolor
Know how to work with water, not against it. A bad wash is a problem to solve, not a reason to start over.
A foundation in botanical painting
Four finished paintings covering form, shadow, composition, and color control. A starting point for any botanical subject you choose next.

MATERIALS FOR THE COURSE
You probably already have most of what you need. Here's what matters.
What You'll Need:
1) Paper: Hot Pressed (Saunders Waterford or Arches). Smooth surface gives you the precision botanical painting demands.
2) Brushes: Size 2 rounds for painting, a spare for mixing, small spotters for fine detail. Jarnie recommends Rosemary & Co series 22.
3) Paints: Winsor & Newton as the base, with a few colors from Daniel Smith, Schmincke, and M.Graham. Each lesson has its own color list.
4) Palette: White ceramic or enamel. Not plastic: it scratches brushes and stains.
Two water pots: one for clean glazes, one for mixing. Keep your colors pure.
Extras: H grade pencil, eraser, ruler, support board, masking tape, kitchen paper, tracing paper.
The full materials list for each project is inside the course.

Contact usYou've looked at a flower and thought: I'd love to paint that.
Then you noticed the shadow curving underneath, the color shifting from petal to petal, and thought: I wouldn't know where to begin.
Start with one bud. Then a clematis. Then two sweet peas. Then a cosmos in full sun.
"A subject has to have a soul and a story to tell. And that's what I'm here to do, to bring them out" – Jarnie Godwin
