Is This Course Right for You?
5 problems this course was built to solve
You reproduce the reference photo as closely as you can. The result looks like the photo, not like a painting. You need a process for turning a reference into your own artistic plan
Too many elements, no focal point, no visual flow. You need to learn how shapes, format, and orientation work together before you touch the brush
You go straight to color and the painting falls apart. You need to understand why value drives everything and how to test it with a study first
Some paintings work, some do not, and you cannot tell why. You need a sequence you can follow from reference to finished piece, every time
You keep adding, adjusting, fixing. The freshness disappears. You need to learn how to evaluate your work at each stage and recognize when the painting is done

Module 1. From Reference to Artistic Plan
Learn how to move beyond simply copying photos. In this lesson, you’ll discover how to choose a reference that inspires a strong painting, simplify it into a clear idea, and make the right creative decisions before you ever touch your brush. By the end, you’ll start painting with purpose – creating original, expressive interpretations instead of imitations.
1 lesson, 23 min
Module 2. Tools for Confident Watercolor
Set yourself up for success by mastering the essentials. You’ll learn which materials truly matter for clean, professional watercolor work, how paper, brushes, and pigments affect your results, and how to prepare efficiently whether you’re in the studio or painting outdoors. After this lesson, you’ll paint with confidence – knowing exactly what to use and why.
1 lesson, 14 min
Module 3. Composition That Works
Great paintings start with great design. You’ll learn how to arrange shapes into balanced, powerful compositions, understand how orientation and format shape emotion, and simplify your scene to strengthen the visual flow. Module 4. Perspective Made Simple
Perspective doesn’t have to be intimidating. This lesson breaks it down into clear, artist-friendly steps. You’ll learn to place forms accurately in space, simplify complex angles, and use perspective to support your painting’s story. Finally, your scenes will feel natural, believable, and beautifully grounded.
1 lesson, 39 min
Module 5. Value: The Foundation of Strength
Strong paintings rest on strong values. Here, you’ll learn how to simplify any subject into clear value groups, understand why value drives structure and focus, and use contrast to guide the viewer’s eye. You’ll begin to see like an artist – building paintings that read clearly and powerfully from across the room.
1 lesson, 43 min
Module 6. Value Study: Testing Success Early
Before adding color, you’ll learn to create black-and-white tonal studies that predict how your final painting will succeed. By focusing on big shapes and clarity, you’ll gain the confidence to evaluate your design decisions early.

Module 7. Color Study: Choosing Emotion and Story
Color transforms everything. In this lesson, you’ll explore how it shapes mood, weather, and atmosphere. You’ll test different color ideas from a single reference and learn practical ways to make harmonious, expressive choices. You’ll start painting with emotion – creating mood and story, not just copying a photo.

Module 8. The Complete Process
Now it all comes together. Step by step, you’ll move from sketch to values, from color to finishing touches.
