During the demonstration, Andy will show how he approaches a landscape reference, creates a Value Study, simplifies the scene, and builds the painting step by step. He will explain the thinking behind each decision — from planning the composition and establishing values to developing the final landscape.

Feedback session 1. From Reference to Value Study: How to Simplify What You See
Curator Terrilynn Dubreuil works through two references, one simpler and one more advanced, in black-and-white sketches and reduces each scene to 3-4 values. She explains what she removes and what she merges, then reviews student paintings and shows where simplification worked and where too much detail stayed in.
Feedback session 2. Where Paintings Go Wrong: Edges, Overworking, and Knowing When to Stop
Terrilynn shows how to control hard, soft and lost edges, how to keep a painting fresh, and how to decide that it is finished. Then she reviews student paintings through these three points.

Deep Practice 1. Building a Painting in Three Values
Paint along with the recording as the group works on one scene in three values: light, mid-tone and dark. Terrilynn builds the value study with you, translates it into color and pauses for feedback after each section.
Deep Practice 2. Integrating Elements: Sky, Foreground, and Focus
Paint a full scene with two or three elements and connect them through values and edges. You see how the sky supports the composition and how each element belongs to the scene instead of reading as a separate part.

Materials for the Program
1) Watercolor Palette: A limited palette is fine — Andy covers his recommended colors in the first lesson
2) Watercolor Paper: 140lb (300gsm) minimum, 9×12″ or larger. Cold press or rough. 100% cotton rag paper recommended
3) Watercolor Brushes: One large flat wash brush (3/4"—1″). One round brush (size 6, 8, or 10) that forms a sharp point when wet
4) Good Extras to Have on Hand: Plastic wrap, old toothbrush, spray bottle with water
