What you'll see and learn:

Landscape

How to read a scene before painting: where the light falls, which shapes carry the shadow, what to push back and what to bring forward

Abstract

How a value study, done before any color, lets Andy see the finished painting before he starts

Portraits

How to create the illusion of distance so the far hills sit back in space instead of sticking to the foreground

Painting technique

How to keep the buildings crisp without touching them with the brush at all, by painting the negative shapes around them

Your recording workshop with Andy Evansen

Day 1

Andy will paint a mountain town: a bell tower, rooftops climbing the hillside, mountains behind, sky above. It is one of the hardest kinds of scenes to begin, because everything competes for attention and nothing tells you where to start.

He will stop at the moments where the decisions happen: what carries the light, what drops into shadow, how far to push the distance, which edges to keep and which to lose.

Expect a full value study first, then watercolor on that same scene, clear explanations throughout, and a Q&A session where Andy answers your questions about value, distance, and negative painting.
