What you'll see and learn:

This is not a standard painting demo. Ian will work from a pre-drawn street scene and focus on specific areas, one at a time. Sketches, explanations, and targeted brushwork on the zones where most paintings fail.

Landscape

How shadows create form and connect separate objects into one readable composition

Abstract

How to control edges so rooftops, figures, and backgrounds sit at the right level of sharpness

Portraits

How to place figures quickly so they belong in the scene without competing with the focal point

Still Life

Why your eye can only focus on one thing at a time, and how this fact should change the way you paint

Your workshop with Ian McManus

Day 1

Shadows, edges, figures, tone. Each technique is isolated and explained.

Ian will work from a prepared drawing of a boatyard scene. Instead of rushing through a full painting, he will stop at each critical zone and show you what happens there and why. You will see how a roofline edge gets softened, how shadows give form to a building, how two different paint consistencies merge without accidents, and how figures drop into a scene at the right scale.

Expect sketches, explanations, and focused brushwork. This is the kind of session where you write things down.
