Lesson 1
Introduction
Organizational information, how to use the platform. The list of materials needed for the course.
Lesson 2
Do's and don'ts
We will get theoretical knowledge about the do’s and don’ts of painting. We will learn how to extract the main compositional idea from masters' works and apply them in our own paintings.
Lesson 3
Sketches with one colour
We will explore the sense of Notan with four sketches, using one colour.
Lesson 4
Figures and trees. Part I
We will apply the principle of Notan to express our idea, painting dark on light.We will learn the techniques to simplify and suggest trees and figures.
Lesson 5
Figures and trees. Part II
We will touch upon colour harmonies and express the idea we already discussed, painting light on dark.
Lesson 6
Trees and fields
Here we will learn how to apply our knowledge of Notan to the complexities of outdoor painting. We will learn techniques to suggest areas of detail. We will learn how to extract the essence of a scene and communicate it to the viewer.
Lesson 7
Details in a landscape
We will now challenge ourselves with an urban scene using the same principles of Notan to tackle it. We will explore tonal and colour relationships. We will learn how to add areas of detail for the viewer to make sense of a scene that may otherwise appear like abstract brush strokes.
Lesson 8
Landscape en plein air. Part I
We will use Notan to paint a scene outside which we will then take indoors to improve and build upon. We will learn how to use our imagination to develop an idea expressed as a sketch.
Lesson 9
Landscape en plein air. Part II
We will put into practise theories explored in the first lesson to create an interesting painting.
Lesson 10
Catching the atmosphere. Part I
We will paint a landscape outside allowing the inspiration of the place and scene to direct our brush strokes. We’ll then learn how to captivate the essence of our outdoor painting through the use of Notan.
Lesson 11
Catching the atmosphere. Part II
We will move away from using photographic references in the studio, instead solely relying on our plein air painting and memory of the scene.
Lesson 12
Conclusion
Creative task. Under Prasad's guidance, you will complete a creative task that will help you work independently. Summing up and getting feedback.

- Prasad is a practicing artist mainly interested in the medium of watercolor and ink
- His childhood spent in the foothills of the Himalayas has made a big impression on his character and interests
- Greatly inspired by Nature, he seeks to discover and express its many moods
- A recent graduate of the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts, Prasad was exposed to a range of art forms and cultures including Indian Miniature, Persian painting, Geometry, Icon painting, and Chinese Landscape painting
- This rich and diverse experience has helped instill within him a deep appreciation for traditional as well as contemporary art
- Through this course Prasad had the opportunity to meet King Charles, and they discussed their shared interest in watercolor
- Prasad also won the Ciclitira Prize, through which his works will be hung in the prestigious Saatchi Gallery

Colours: Aureolin/Lemon Yellow/Windsor Yellow, Rose Madder Genuine/Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red, Yellow Ochre/Raw Sienna, Van Dyke Brown/Sepia, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue/Windsor Blue (Red Shade), Indigo, Viridian, Sap Green
You don’t need all of these colours, just a good red, yellow, blue and perhaps green and brown.
