Where do we begin? In this course, we will start simply, step-by-step, painting the expressive jewels of the landscape – flowers! Each lesson of the course begins with intent, creating a foundational layer, building a composition with basic shapes, and applying pastel palettes that harmonize to make each flower sing! Instruction is given with positive reinforcement and encouragement to listen to your inner voice and embrace your unique mark making. 


Whether you are a novice or seasoned professional, this course is designed to help you approach the canvas with confidence while enjoying the discoveries of the creative process along the way!

Meet your instructor Anne Kindl

Author of the course


  • Anne Kindl is an award winning pastelist based in Michigan. She primarily makes landscapes and florals in pastels.
  • Anne discovered the power of art at a young age, and it continues to guide her creative journey. She received her Bachelor of Fine Art from the College of Design at Iowa State University, and spent 25 years as a graphic designer in corporations and nonprofit organizations.
  • In her artworks, she focuses on the elements of nature and abstract realism blending the emotional response to pure color with the unique individualism of spontaneous marks.
  • Anne's work has gained national recognition with exhibits at The International Association of Pastel Societies, The National Arts Club in NYC and the Zho B Art Center in Chicago. She teaches classes and workshops throughout the year. Anne recently has been featured in American Art Collector, and has received honorable mention in Pastel Journal’s Pastel 100.
  • She is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, Great Lakes Pastel Society and is a Master Circle member of the International Association of Pastel Societies.

Select a light, medium light, medium dark and dark of each of the colors on the 12 color wheel + a few greys (see color palettes for reference).


- 12 Color Wheel
- Gray Scale & Value Finder
- Isopropyl  Alcohol or Water
- Flat Brush, 1” (25mm)
- Sketch Pad
- Pencil, Pen or Marker
- Shaper, Stomp or Tortillion


*Please note that these are only recommended materials. Artist grade brand materials are encouraged for the best results such as Sennelier 20 assorted half sticks (soft) and PrismaColor NuPastel 24 set (hard).
