At this course, you'll complete 3 dynamic street scenes, starting with a tonal sketch to grasp the essentials of composition, then moving into two full watercolor paintings: one glowing with sunlight and shadow, the other rich with reflections from a rainy day. These scenes come alive with figures, vehicles, and the subtle cues of daily life – each one painted in a direct, loose style that’s as bold as it is refined.

Lesson 1. 

Tonal Study: Wet Street Scene in Monochrome

In this lesson, you will learn how to break down a complex urban reference into 3 major tonal shapes and create mood and clarity using just one color. You will see why tone matters more than color in creating visual impact.


As a result, you will stop relying on color to carry your painting and begin to see value structure as the foundation of composition and drama. You will gain confidence in using tone as your primary design tool.

Lesson 2.

Light & Temperature: Street Scene in Limited Color

Here, you will move on to learning how to use warm and cool tones to express light and shadow, how to simplify color choices using a limited palette, and how to paint focal points that glow by surrounding them with darkness.


The lesson will help you discover how to evoke sunlight and atmosphere with minimal colors and gain the skill of balancing color temperature to lead the eye.

Lesson 3. 

Depth & Perspective: Urban Scene with Cars and Figures

In this lesson, you will see how to organize foreground and background for strong perspective and flow, simplify vehicles, figures, and buildings into readable, dynamic shapes, and see how to connect elements in the painting to avoid “cut-out” look.


As a result, you will stop avoiding complex city scenes and start confidently composing paintings with figures, cars, and architecture – all while achieving depth and focus.

  • Watercolor paper - Rough texture 300 grams weight Baohong or similar cotton rag quality is best.
  • Brushes - large and medium squirrel mops & Escoda size 10 synthetic pointed round
  • Pencil
  • Rubber
  • A3 Board to tape paper on to

  • Kitchen roll
  • Tube watercolor paints from Winsor & Newton or Daniel Smith Ranges. Colours as below or similar: 
    Yellow Ochre or raw sienna, light red or burnt sienna , burnt umber, sepia, cobalt turquoise, lemon yellow, cadmium yellow,Purple red, verditer blue or Cobalt blue , ultramarine blue, neutral tint, Lavender.
