Experiment with gouache and see how water affects the thickness of paint and how the tone and density changes with adding more or less water to the paint.
Experimenting with transparency
Choose 2 colors and see how they interact by changing the transparency of the upper paint. This will help you cope with reactivation of the lower layer and change paint density – from half-transparent to fully covering layer.
Studying color wheel
Make a color wheel taking thick paints and see the result you’ll get.
Changing the intensity
Experiment with the intensity of paint and see how to get different shades from a limited color palette.
Warm and cool color wheel
See the difference between warm and cool shades of the same colors and learn to make a harmonious color gamut.

Paint: I use goauche from various brands such as Maimeri, Turner, and M. Graham but you can use any brand that you’d like. Winsor and Newton gouache is probably the easiest to find in most art stores. Budget brands like Arteza will work as well. You can see my full palette below if interested. All of these colors are certainly not necessary for this lesson or for painting in general.
