Figures in Watercolor: From Sketch to Composition
Learn to capture movement, proportion, and grace of the human figure in watercolor — even if painting people has always been your weak spot
LIFETIME ACCESS |
«Mastering realism sharpens our observation, enriches our artistic expression, and connects viewers to our vision on a deeper level»
Artefacto students
Painting the human figure is often called the ultimate test for any artist. It's complex, demanding, and unforgiving — which is exactly why most watercolorists avoid it.
This focused mini-course takes you from basic gesture sketches to a finished multi-figure composition. No endless theory, no detours — just the essential skills you need to paint people with confidence.
By the end, you'll have completed 5 sketches and 2 finished watercolor paintings — plus you will have a skill set that transforms how you approach any subject with people in it.
What you'll learn
Proportions & Anatomy
Understand how the human body works across different poses and angles — knowledge you'll use in every painting with people
Gesture & Movement
Capture the essence of a pose in just a few lines. No more frozen, mannequin-like figures
Light & Shadow on the Figure
See how light "sculpts" the body and learn to render it convincingly in watercolor
Drapery & Fabric
Master the logic of folds — why fabric behaves the way it does, and how to paint it
Multi-Figure Composition
Place multiple people in one scene with visual harmony and clear focal points
What you'll create
5 figure sketches exploring poses, gesture, and drapery + 2 complete watercolor paintings ready for your portfolio or wall
Course Table of Contents
7 lessons • 5 sketches • 2 finished paintings
Introduction
Anna welcomes you to the course and walks you through what to expect, how the lessons are structured, and how to get the most from your learning journey
Lesson 1: Dancing Ballerina — Arms & Expression
In this opening lesson, you'll draw a dancer mid-movement and discover how to capture the energy of a pose in just a few confident lines. Anna guides you through the proportions of the human figure, with special attention to arms and facial expression — two areas that bring a figure to life. You'll learn to see gestures before detail, and find that even complex poses become approachable when you know where to look first.
Lesson 2: Standing Figure — Form & Volume
Now we slow down and explore how light shapes the figure. You'll draw a standing ballerina with a musical instrument, focusing on the interplay of light and shadow across the body. Anna shows you how to identify where shadows fall and how to suggest volume with simple tonal values. This lesson builds your confidence in creating figures that feel three-dimensional and grounded — not flat or floating.
Lesson 3: Dynamic Pose — Less Is More
Here's where you loosen up. In this lesson, you'll tackle a more dynamic pose and learn to convey movement with semi-abstract, expressive strokes. Anna demonstrates how to simplify complexity — capturing the essence of motion without overworking the details. You'll see how a few well-placed marks can say more than a tight, careful drawing. It's a skill that will transform not just your figure work, but your entire artistic approach.
Lesson 4: Understanding Drapery — Drawing & Watercolor
Fabric intimidates many artists, but it follows simple, learnable logic. In this lesson, you'll first explore how clothing drapes on the body — where folds form, how fabric stretches and gathers. Then you'll move into watercolor, creating a finished painting that captures light, contrast, and the delicate texture of a dancer's dress. Anna walks you through every step: from understanding the "why" behind folds to rendering them beautifully in paint.
Lesson 5: Multi-Figure Composition — Drawing & Watercolor
The culmination of your journey. In this lesson, you'll create a complex composition featuring several ballerinas in flowing tutus. Starting with a sketch, Anna shows you how to arrange multiple figures harmoniously. Then in watercolor, you'll bring it to life — managing soft washes, conveying the ethereal quality of light fabric, and building a scene with depth and movement. You'll walk away with a stunning, portfolio-worthy piece and the confidence to paint figures in any future work.
Conclusion
Anna summarizes the key techniques you've learned throughout the course and shares guidance on how to continue developing your figure painting skills. You'll also receive a creative task to practice on your own — your next step beyond the course.

What makes this course different
Complete cycle: sketch to composition
Five preparatory drawings build systematically toward two finished paintings. Each step prepares you for the next
Focus on movement,
not static poses
Ballerinas are the perfect training ground — their dynamic poses teach you gesture, rhythm, and grace that transfer to any figure work
Practical anatomy for artists
Not medical diagrams — exactly what you need to make figures look convincing and alive
Drapery and fabric demystified
Learn the logic of folds, tutus, and flowing fabric — a skill rarely taught but essential for any subject involving people
Multi-figure composition
Your final painting features several figures in one scene — a level most courses never reach
This course is for you if:
01
You've mastered florals, landscapes, or animals — but avoid references with people in them
02
You can follow step-by-step tutorials, but your own figures still look stiff or "off"
03
You want to understand why proportions work, not just copy what you see
04
You're ready for a challenge that will genuinely push your skills forward
05
You dream of painting portraits someday but need to master the body first
This course is not for you if:
- You're a complete beginner who has never worked with watercolor before
- You're looking for a quick, easy win — this course requires practice and patience
- You only want to follow along without understanding the principles
Certificate of completion (Premium Plan)
Upon completion of the course for the students of Premium plan we issue a certificate. The certificate could be used as a proof of your qualification's upgrade at work (if it is related to arts) and for your private affairs as a recognition of your mastery in painting.
