Abstract art is often composed of random and unrecognizable shapes that create interest and leave room for interpretation. Students will learn how to find interesting shapes and build upon them to create an abstract design".

Lesson 1

Introduction

Organizational information, how to use the platform. The list of materials needed for the course.

Lesson 2

Abstract expressionism. Part 1

We will learn to find design ideas and get inspiration for an abstract painting, study different kinds of line, and build a strong composition.

Lesson 3

Abstract expressionism. Part 2

We will see how to save white paper and build color and contrast, make bold brush strokes, create crispy lines, and combine working on dry and wet paper.

Lesson 4

Vibrations. Part 1

We will paint a floral composition creating movement, using bright contrasting colors, and combining working with a wet and a dry brush.

Lesson 5

Vibrations. Part 2

We will exaggerate design elements, use expressive colors, and build layers of negative shapes.

Lesson 6

A stylized still life. Part 1

We will be distorting and exaggerating shapes and building an abstracted background.

Lesson 7

A stylized still life. Part 2

We will practice overlapping and laying shapes, mixing bright contrasting colors, and making active textures.

Lesson 8

Conclusion

Summing up, getting feedback, and doing a creative task using the techniques and knowledge acquired.

Sterling Edwards is a contemporary watercolor master, instructor, author, and art juror.
