Watercolor birds
in nature
Learn to compose artworks in an interesting vertical format, master authentic techniques associated with Chinese and Japanese traditional painting, and create 3 airy watercolors full of tenderness and light!
LIFETIME ACCESS
In this course, you will learn how to avoid muddiness in watercolor, how to work with color, light, and tone. Very often, the background and central object exist separately, don't match, and argue, making the object seem cut out.
You will learn how to solve these problems and harmoniously combine the background with the bird, making it interesting and not interrupting the main subject. You will also learn how to emphasize the main thing, create a complete image, convey mood, and make the bird come to life.
Three different subjects and three different moods await you. Together, we will learn to paint watercolors realistically, confidently, and with pleasure!
Who is this course for?
The course will suit both beginners and experienced artists who:
- want to learn how to paint birds with watercolor realistically and avoid common mistakes;
- dream to master the technique of layering watercolor and learn how to create spectacular textures;
- would like to learn different painting approaches, see how to work with light and volume;
- want to add more air, life, and harmony to their paintings.

You will paint the robin, starting with a layering technique to transition from light to dark. Create soft transitions between colors, adding volume to the bird by working with the interplay of light and shadow in the background. Focus on the bird’s details, painting the feathers to maintain realistic volume and airiness. Bring the bird to the foreground, enhancing its colors for brightness and saturation
Refine the background by darkening it and enhancing its saturation, avoiding muddiness and spots. Highlight the bird and flowers by adjusting the background colors. Paint a branch, adding texture and definition. Detail the robin’s legs and create a natural shadow cast by the bird. Work on the distant background and the flowers in the foreground, ensuring they complement the overall composition without overshadowing the robin. Establish harmony within the composition, uniting all the main elements. Finalize the flowers with detailed touches and complete the painting.

Terrilynn Dubreuil
Watercolor artist

«I have painted with watercolor since my Fine Art classes at the University and I started teaching it soon after and have taught it ever since. I love the fresh, flowing approach to the medium.
Watercolor gives me an oblique strategy approach to art because one has to to approach it in an almost „opposite“ way of thinking from other media. It keeps my brain active! I use watercolor a lot for studies, plein air sketches, and underpaintings for my pastel paintings.»
- Degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts, Summa Cum Laude, with augmented Master level courses.
- Teaching art for 35 years. Multiple media and levels.
- Workshops, Classes and Demos, both live and virtual, with local and international students.
