Our learning program at a glance
Do these challenges seem common to you?
Overworking the Paper: muddied colors and a lack of clarity in the painting
Lack of Composition: chaotic or unbalanced painting with excessive details
Poor Color Choices: too light or too dark
Inadequate Value Contrast: flat and dull-looking artwork
Lack of Depth: two-dimensional and unrealistic paintings
Ignoring Negative Space: leads to a cluttered composition
Incorrect Brushwork: can make the painting appear messy and unrefined
If you answered "yes" to any of these, you might benefit from a refresher on fundamental painting techniques.
Learning Program
(9 modules, 34 video lessons, 13 hours)
Intro 0. About materials
We will dive into the crucial realm of materials, guiding you on how to make informed choices, what key factors to pay attention to, and the essential minimum set of art supplies needed to embark on your watercolor journey.
1 lesson, 17 min
Module 1. Types of washes and brushstrokes
This first module will cover the main types of washes and paint consistency through simple lessons. Andy will demonstrate how to achieve smooth transitions of color as well. It’s very important to grasp this technical aspect of watercolor before proceeding and will help to avoid hard edges, dry brush marks and blooms in places where they shouldn’t be.
4 lessons, 56 min
Studying brushstroke and surface
We will do a quick exercise to understand how a dry or wet surface works, using different references.
Value study for Farm house
Quick value study for farm house where we will learn how to make smooth transitions of shapes. We will see where the shadow falls and where the lighter areas are.
Color work for Farm house
Quick color work for the farmhouse from the previous lesson, in which Andy will show how to achieve smooth color transitions, how to technically combine multiple colors to avoid muddy and unconnected spots in the work.
Practicing Wet on wet
We will learn how to work in one of the complex techniques "wet on wet", doing work with the sky, without details.
Module 2. Value studies and improving compositions
Here we will focus on reference photographs that are either too complex or need some modifying to improve the composition, and show how to use value study process to accomplish the simplification and changes.
3 lessons, 1 h 12 min
Theory
The theoretical part about tonal value and why its important. Andy will show examples of his tonal studies and references and explain how to simplify, how to highlight the main thing in a scene, etc.
Winter scene. Tonal value
We'll make a small simplified pencil drawing and complete the tonal study of a winter scene, highlight deeper shadows to convey volume, and learn how to simplify the reference.
Cat and wheel. Tonal value
We will analyze another, not less complicated reference, learn how it can be simplified while retaining the main figures of the scene, make a tonal study of the street with a cat and a bicycle, find big shapes.
Module 3. Skies
Now we will start to tackle the individual aspects of landscape painting, beginning with what is typically the first thing painted, the sky. Andy will demonstrate three different types of skies: blue sky with clouds; sunset sky; and stormy sky. He will also provide a handful of reference photos for students to use for practice.
3 lessons, 1 h 17 min
Blue sky
We will analyze the first type of sky in the wet on wet technique. We will paint blue sky with clouds, learn that white clouds have their own tone and learn how to take the right tone to depict white clouds realistically.
Stormy sky
We will paint a stormy sky in the wet on wet technique, learn how to create an illusion of sun between the clouds, how to create an effect of storm.
Sunset sky
In this lesson, we will paint a sunset sky in wet on wet technique, Andy will share his tips on how to paint such sky and why to do the work upside down, we will talk about how to avoid wrong shades when mixing blue and red.
Module 4. Trees
Trees have an individuality of their own, and too often students paint them with carelessness, not paying attention to their form. In this module, Andy will demonstrate how to paint evergreen trees, winter trees, full foliage trees, autumn trees, and palm trees, as well as how to mass them together in forest scenes. He will also demonstrate how to get lighter trunks and branches without having to resort to masking fluid.
4 lessons, 1 h 17 min
Green trees
Learn how to paint trees with soft edges, how to paint shadows, trunks, use scratching for light parts.
Winter trees
In this lesson, we will learn how to paint winter trees without leaves, applying a dry brush technique on a dry surface.
Palm trees
Andy will show techniques for creating a realistic palm tree that can be incorporated into your seascape. We learn how to paint a palm tree with a dry brush technique to create realistic foliage.
Conifer trees
In this lesson, we will learn how to properly paint conifers. We will learn how their branches grow, how to create the effect of pine needles with a dry brush.
Module 5. Water
There are many different types of ‘water’: rushing rivers, calm ponds, dramatic waterfalls, and ocean waves. Andy will show some examples and demonstrate how to get convincing effects in all four.
4 lessons, 1 h 37 min
Calm water
In the first lesson, we will paint calm water and talk about how to make reflections. Andy will show an example of how easy it is to paint boat, and we will learn how to connect the boat and reflections to make it look solid.
Waterfall
In the lesson with the waterfall, we will learn how to depict rocks using the dry brush technique. We will learn how to depict water dynamically. We'll learn how to create the effect of falling water by painting dark rocks around it.
Ocean wave
In this lesson, under Andy's guidance, we'll learn how to paint a wave. We will learn how to depict a splash with a dry brush as well as without a masking fluid. Make reflections and talk about how to connect shapes.
Sparkle on the water
We will learn and put into practice the effect of slipping a dry brush to depict sparkle and glare on water without any reservation of these areas.
Module 6. Animals
In this module, Andy will discuss the different shapes of various animals and birds seen in the landscape, how to accurately yet loosely depict them, and make them integrated into the painting so they appear natural, not stiff afterthoughts.
3 lessons, 1 h 6 min
Horses
In this lesson, we will talk about how to paint horses. How to work with middle value, make a shadow, learn where to simplify and how to connect all shapes.
Cows
In this lesson, we will paint cows and learn how to connect cow shapes with backgrounds, avoiding muddying the color mixing.
Sheep
Here we will learn how to paint white sheeps simple and effective to create the effect of a detailed scene without overworking.
Module 7. Architecture
We will tackle ways to simplify a couple of scenes with buildings, both as frontlit subjects and backlit background shapes. Andy will discuss the importance of simplifying just enough so they read well but don’t overtake the painting with details. There are also some drawing and perspective tips that need to be covered.
4 lessons, 1 h 40 min
Theory
In this lesson, Andy gives the theory by showing the references that he will work on in the next lessons, talking about how to depict the shadow on buildings, how to simplify architecture that looks complicated.
Street scene with a tower
In this lesson, we'll explore the relationship of shapes in the painting, and we'll talk about how to understand the vanishing point. Andy will show how to draw a car. Also in this lesson, we will talk about overworking shapes and how to make ordinary things extraordinary.
Sunny street
We will study negative painting, try to find middle tonal value. We will learn how to correctly connect different shapes in a painting, such as figures, buildings. We'll talk about light and shadow and learn how to simplify a complex reference.
Bridge
Learn to work with a complex structure by simplifying its shapes. We will learn to reflect in the process of painting. We will apply the acquired knowledge of finding big shapes.
Module 8. Figures
Perhaps one of the most difficult things for students learning watercolor is to incorporate convincing people into their landscapes. From the drawing, scale, suggestion of movement, and integration into the scene, figures are a daunting task. Andy will discuss and demonstrate ways to handle them convincingly.
5 lessons, 1 h 48 min
Exercise 1. A couple
In this lesson, we will learn how to paint figures without too much detail. We will paint a couple under an umbrella, try to find loose connections of shapes, map shadows.
Exercise 2. Crosswalk
Learn how to paint figures without reference and without pencil drawing. We'll learn how to add people to the background, how to create an illusion of multiple people with just three figures and a few abstract brush strokes.
The Black Swan
We will make a value study for figure, learn how to find big shapes, learn how to work with soft edges. We will work with big brush for big shapes. We’ll learn how to connect the shapes to the background so that it looks harmonious.
Fugures. Part I
In this lesson, we will define what is light, where is a shadow. We will make a value study of a man with a boat.
Figures. Part II
We will learn how to depict dramatic light, learn how to work with a reference with strong light & shadow.
Module 9. Nocturnes
Night scenes are very difficult in watercolor because of how much paint you need to use to make things look dark without becoming too muddy. Andy will demonstrate a night painting and show example of some of his previous paintings to highlight some important aspects of making those small spots of ‘light’, whether the moon, headlights or streetlights, appear like they are bright while keeping the mystery in shadows.
4 lessons, 1 h 42 min
Sea night scene. Part I
We will explore the theories of nocturne painting based on Andy's work. We will learn how to paint a night scene on the seashore, depicting the lights of houses in the background, reflections on the water. Andy will also show how to paint the moon.
Sea night scene. Part II
We continue to paint that scene. We’ll create the texture of sand, paint the boats, use the technique of dry brush for rocks and trees, add figures.
Street night scene. Part I
We will make a simplified drawing. Paint a scene in the wet on wet technique, make the first layer. We'll learn how to draw light from a streetlight, make soft edges, and add contrast.
Street night scene. Part II
We will continue painting the scene, adding here a dramatic night sky and adding some shapes without too much detail.
