Module One: Design Concepts
Here we will dive deep into what makes a good abstract painting. We will train our eyes to be able to see what makes an appealing piece of art and learn how to use design, values, edges, and overlapping, and interesting shapes to create depth and interest in a painting.

We will also cover how to use negative painting techniques as well as select all the materials we will be using in the program. All of these things are essential for you to be able to begin creating interesting and appealing abstract paintings.
Introduction
Here we will dive deep into what makes a good abstract painting. Sterling will tell us what we'll be breaking down in this lesson and why it's important in abstract painting.
Interesting and overlapping shapes
We will break down examples of composition and learn what makes it successful, using short exercises as a case study.
Finding possibilities
Sterling will show how to find ideas for a future painting using Zoom Finder.
Selecting the right tools and materials
We will talk about what materials will be needed for the work, how to choose them and what to pay attention to.
Negative painting techniques
We will do a watercolor exercise that will help you better understand the negative shapes technique.
Module Two: Applications
In this module we will deep dive into all of the technical aspects that you need to create amazing abstract paintings in the medium of watercolor. This medium has its unique characteristics and we want to use them to our advantage when painting abstract watercolor.

This includes wet into wet, wet into dry, dry on wet and dry on dry, as well as more specific techniques such as calligraphy, sgraffito (scratching), lifting, blending and glazing. All of these techniques will create a different result, and we want to explore all the unique effects of watercolor to enable us to create interesting and captivating artworks. We will also learn about how to avoid mud by using knowledge of color theory so that we can paint more confidently and boldly, and paint our first piece together using everything we've learned so far.

In this module we will deep dive into all of the technical aspects that you need to create amazing abstract paintings in the medium of watercolor.
Studying surface
Quick exersices for wet into wet, wet into dry, dry on wet and dry on dry techniques.
Specific techniques
We will do a quick exercise to understand how specific techniques such as calligraphy, sgraffito (scratching), lifting, blending and glazing work.
Blue depths
We will paint our first piece together using everything we've learned so far and get the first result with dynamic abstraction.
Module Three: Watercolor Abstracts; Putting it all Together
In this module you will learn how to use shapes, colors, values and texture, arranged in a very spontaneous, almost intuitive, unique way. We're using expressive brushstrokes, colors and random, interlocking shapes to create a simple, yet effective abstract expressionist watercolor.

We use everything that we have learned so far as we deepen our knowledge and expand our options in abstract painting.

In this lesson you will learn how to use shapes, colors, values and texture, arranged in a very spontaneous, almost intuitive, unique way.
Concentric
We're using expressive brushstrokes, colors and random, interlocking shapes to create a simple, yet effective abstract expressionist watercolor.
Module Four: A Simple Yet Dynamic Abstract
In this module we are creating a dynamic design with bold colors, splatter, lines and sgraffito. As you already see there are many different ways to paint abstract watercolors, and this is a style that works great for interior design!

We start with a thin layer of blue on dry paper, and work our way to increasingly stronger colors, using some sgraffito, some calligraphy and splatter as we go. This piece is a very loose, free forming painting, with a look of spontaneity and freshness that attracts a lot of people.

Module Five: A Positively Negative Abstract
In this module we create a painting that stimulates the imagination of the viewer. We're starting with a clear idea of the main point of interest but are at the same time open for creating a new direction.

We are building up the composition in several layers, looking for opportunities to add negative shapes and depth as we go, softening edges and adding contrast until we are satisfied with the final result.
