"Watercolour is a love affair with pigment. The fewer strokes you use, the more life remains in the painting" – Hazel Soan

Hazel’s teaching goes beyond technique. She helps you paint with freedom, clarity, and confidence. Her philosophy is to paint the watercolor, not just the subject – capturing the essence of light, tone, and movement rather than copying detail.

Over two days, Hazel will guide you through a series of studies and complete paintings that focus on the building blocks of expressive watercolor:

Day 1: Tonal Value and Hue → understanding how tone builds form and depth, and how hue sets mood and atmosphere.

Day 2: Light, Shape, and Shadow → using positive and negative space to create energy, movement, and narrative in your compositions.

You will watch Hazel demonstrate live, paint alongside her, and receive comments on your own work – all in an intimate, interactive group setting.

Day 1 – Tonal Value & Hue: Form and Depth

Painting 1 (demo): The Language of Tone

A focused exploration of how tonal value and hue work together to build structure and atmosphere.

  • Discover the difference between tone (value) and hue (color), and why tone creates form while hue adds mood.
  • Learn to mix colors that maintain clarity of value, avoiding “muddy” results.
  • Practice wet-into-wet and wet-on-dry to suggest depth and form without overworking details.

Painting 2 (demo + feedback): The Power of Limited Palettes

An exercise in restraint that reveals how much can be achieved with less.

  • Work with a reduced palette to strengthen tonal awareness and compositional unity.
  • Build form through incremental layers of value, moving from light to dark.
  • Receive feedback on your work to highlight how subtle tonal shifts can transform a painting.

Day 2 – Light, Shape & Shadow: Narrative and Energy

Painting 3 (demo): Painting with Movement

A deep dive into expressive brushwork and the narrative power of light.

  • Use descriptive, purposeful strokes that carry meaning and avoid “fussy” detail.
  • Explore the impact of opaque pigments to add punch and drama.
  • Learn to design with both positive and negative space, creating energy in your composition.

Painting 4 (demo + feedback): Shadows in Motion

An exploration of movement and atmosphere through contrast.

  • Harness the fluidity of wet-into-wet to imply action and rhythm.
  • Mix rich, lively blacks that energize rather than deaden the paper.
  • Balance control and spontaneity to keep the painting alive, followed by feedback on student works.
